Tuesday (2/21)

  1.  Today we wrote a creative, progressive MALL STORY, prompted by Challenger Deep chapter 12.
  2. Next, we discussed the weekend assigned reading, chapters 18 + 19.
  3. We updated data tracking charts.

Homework:  Read CD chapters 20 -26, record new details on charts, and Reading Response 4A:  Find 6 examples that something is off with Caden.  Include page numbers.

Due:  Periods  4+5 = Wednesday, 2/22  Periods 3+6 = Thursday. 2/23

Wednesday (2/22)

  1.  Period 6:  See Tuesday’s post.
  2. Periods 4 and 5 began class by sketching Caden and illustrating with words and symbols the two worlds he straddles.
  3. Next, we discussed the assigned reading and added to our data collecting charts.
  4. In groups, students shared examples of Caden showing that something is off.  Each group recorded one or two on a strip that was posted on the bulletin board.

Homework: Read CD chapters 27-34 and add to charts.

DUE: Period 5 = Thursday, 2/23    and Periods 3+4+6 = Friday, 2/24

Thursday (2/23)

  1.  Periods 3+4+6, see Wednesday’s post.
  2. Period 5’s class began with “Scantron Art.”
  3. Then we read and marked an article about the Mariana’s Trench.
  4. Class ended with independent reading of chapters 35-39.

Friday (2/17)

Homework:  Read Challenger Deep chapters 18 +19, add to charts, and make sure you’ve written a response to RR #4.

DUE:  Periods 3,4,5= Tuesday (2/21)   and Period 6 = Wednesday (2/22)

Thursday (2/16)

  1.  Periods 3,4,6 met today.
  2. Class began with a read around of non-sequiturs from our novel.
  3. Next, we read other examples by Lemony Snicket and M.E.
  4. Students wrote a short and long original non-sequitur, imitating the published examples.  These were shared in groups of 4.
  5. We continued reading and discussing Challenger Deep and recording data on our retrieval charts.

Homework:  Read Challenger Deep up to page 26 and fill in charts. DUE Periods 3,4,5,6= Friday, 2/17

Tuesday (2/14)

  1.  Classes 6,4,5 met today.
  2. The class began with a pre-writing activity for a preference poem that will be continued throughout the week.
  3. As a class we read Challenger Deep chapters 1-5 and created a word bank for a Wordle display.  Unfortunately, I neglected to save the word compilation and it was lost!  No biggie.
  4. You are to complete Reading Response 2 in the makeshift packet we made.

Monday (2/13)

  1.  Periods 3,4,5 meet today.
  2. The Journal writing prompt was to connect the development of empathy with the literature we’ve read in class.
  3. We visited the library to check out copies of Challenger Deep; remember that this book must travel back and forth between the classroom and home.

  5. We made book predictions based on a drawing that appears on the first page of the book.
  6. Predictions were shared.
