7th Grade

Students were asked today to email any parts not yet handed in of the group essay written in class last week, as technical difficulties were plentiful. We discussed characterization by writing short (140 character) “Tweets” containing advice a character from The Outsiders might give to another character from a book or story read this year. We then continued reading the book, and I reminded students that I’ll be checking off their Character Analysis Sheets in class tomorrow, after a short block of work time to finish them. I know many students have multiple finals this week, so am not planning to assign any homework.

I am so grateful that I was able to spend four days with my parents who traveled to Oregon from Ohio for my only child’s graduation.  They will probably never be fit enough to visit again in their life times.

I am disappointed with the feedback on some 8th graders’ behavior.

Your final assignments are these two: Whirligig themes chart and juxtaposition sheets. You really need to focus during class—-especially some students in 4th period.  They are due on Wednesday.

7th Grade

Students spent yesterday and today’s block working on their group essays. Literature circle groups chose essay topics on Tuesday and spent time in-class writing individually about those topics. Yesterday and today, they were asked to get into their groups and combine these writings to form a 4-5 paragraph essay. This essay is due tomorrow, Friday the 8th. I expect these to be rough essays, but want to see evidence of critical thinking and use of the book to back up opinions and conclusions. Essays should be typed, as each student is only responsible for one paragraph, and I’ve provided plenty of time in-class for composition. Students who experience technical issues should email their essays to me at: hammonss@wlwv.k12.or.us

7th Grade

Today, students took a quiz on Chapters 1-6 of the Outsiders, and began free-writing in preparation for group essays to be written in class tomorrow and Thursday. These essays are expected to be rough, but thorough, and will be handed in no later than Friday, June 8th. Students should be checking their grades on PASS and following up if they have concerns and information about missing work.
