  • Weekly Planner Sheet This is a document for students who have lost their planner.  It’s a sheet they can print out weekly and use to record their homework.  The template mimics our planners.  Since students are required to use a planner – this template is offered as a replacement for those who may need it.

MONDAY 4/03 – “E” Day  

PERIODS 1 , 2, 5, & 6 

  • Today we began class with a freewrite – where we worked on “exploding a moment” by capturing every detail students could about an “Awesome Moment” they experienced lately.
  • Next, we worked on writing “Thesis Statements” around theme or character for Breaking Through. We are preparing for a Literary Essay Test next week. Students will have time in class to prepare, but the actual writing of the essay will be in class only.
  • We will continue our Thesis Statement work in our next class session.

TUESDAY 4/04 – “A” Day

PERIODS 1 , 2, & 5  

  • Today we worked on “Word Choice”, “Sentence Fluency”, and Revision Techniques. We will continue working on these over the next couple weeks.
  • Students also took a quiz on the book Breaking Through.

PERIOD 5  

  • Today we worked in groups sharing Essay Leads.  Students were able to revise their leads as they shared and discussed in groups.
  • Then they brainstormed possible examples of evidence from the book to support their Thesis Statement.
  • Next, we reviewed how to cite and explain evidence from a handout what was given.  A copy of the handout can be downloaded here:

Citing Evidence in Literary Essays

  • Finally, we looked at a sample body (supporting) paragraph and identified the required parts:  topic sentence, evidence, page numbers, explanations.

Citing Evidence in Literary Essays

Coming Up:

All classes will be writing a Literary Essay next week in class – as a final assessment.  We have been working on all the parts for the essay (Introduction, Thesis Statement, Body Paragraphs, Citing Evidence, Explaining Evidence, Conclusion).  The Essay Test is open book and open notes.  So, students can use any notes I have given them or that they created while in class.
