  • 3rd Quarter Home Reading Log (HRL): The 3rd Quarter HRL has been given out.  Students will keep track of the number of minutes they read weekly.  IMPORTANT:  NO HRLs will be accepted late…they must be completed before they come to class and be turned in at the beginning of class to get credit.  *All HRLs are due the last day of the week that class meets.
  • This quarter we are working on “Figurative Language” used in stories, like:  simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, personification, idiom. The HRL has all the directions for what is required each week.  An extra copy of the HRL is below:

  • Weekly Planner Sheet This is a document for students who have lost their planner.  It’s a sheet they can print out weekly and use to record their homework.  The template mimics our planners.  Since students are required to use a planner – this template is offered as a replacement for those who may need it.

MONDAY 3/13 – “A” Day

PERIODS 1 , 2, & 5

  • Today we worked on the yellow handout for Breaking Through.  Students worked in groups to fill in a “Conflict” and “Theme” – including both evidence from the book and explanations to support their evidence and thinking.
  • Pages 128-193 (finish the book) were assigned for reading in Breaking Through.

Breaking Through Audio – can be found on the page named “breaking through” at the top of this blog page.

  • Students spent the last portion of the class period beginning to type up their “For My People” poem.  This is where they identified four groups of people that they feel they are a part of…groups they identify as part of “who they are”.  For each group, they will want to include details about the group.   Possible things to include in the stanzas are:
    • What do you celebrate about this group?  Like about this group?  Appreciate about this group?
    • Who are the people close to you in this group?  What are they like?
    • When do you express this part of yourself?
    • Where do you spend your time with this group?
    • What are some misconceptions people have about this group?  Defend your group?
    • How does this group make you feel?
    • A copy of the handout with requirements, space to brainstorm, and sample stanzas from other students can be downloaded here:
