  • This quarter we are working on “Figurative Language” used in stories, like:  simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, personification, idiom. The HRL has all the directions for what is required each week.  An extra copy of the HRL is below:

  • Weekly Planner Sheet This is a document for students who have lost their planner.  It’s a sheet they can print out weekly and use to record their homework.  The template mimics our planners.  Since students are required to use a planner – this template is offered as a replacement for those who may need it.

PERIODS 1 , 2, & 5

  • Today we reviewed some of the conflicts in the book Breaking Through in the first assigned reading section (Pg. 1-69).  Groups worked together to identify a conflict, find evidence in the book for it, and elaborate “how” and “why” it was a conflict in this story.

Breaking Through Audio – can be found on the page named “breaking through” at the top of this blog page.

  • Today we had out Final Comprehensive Vocabulary TEST over all 40 root words we’ve been studying the last four weeks.  After taking the test, we “corrected” a majority of the test, so student have a general idea of how they did on it.  They will get their actual score next week after I grade them all completely.
  • Students spent the last portion of the class period continuing to brainstorm for our next poem “For My People”.  This is where they identify four groups of people that they feel they are a part of…groups they identify as part of “who they are”.  For each group, they will brainstorm details to include in a poem.  Possible things to include in the stanzas are:
    • What do you celebrate about this group?  Like about this group?  Appreciate about this group?
    • Who are the people close to you in this group?  What are they like?
    • When do you express this part of yourself?
    • Where do you spend your time with this group?
    • What are some misconceptions people have about this group?  Defend your group?
    • How does this group make you feel?
  • A copy of the handout with requirements, space to brainstorm, and sample stanzas from other students can be downloaded here:
